Yesterday, this blog gathered up a sampling of conservative commentary attempting to make sense of the assassination of Charlie Kirk. Here are some more extracts:
Stephen Kruiser: . . . the assassination of Charlie Kirk has pushed people to places that they never wanted to be pushed to. My use of the word watershed in the headline was deliberate because it means "turning point." People were already emotionally raw over the brutal murder of Iryna Zarutska; Kirk's public execution is too much to process with anything but righteous anger.
. . .
A couple of weeks ago, I twice wrote about the Democrats' desire to see us dead. They're not very secretive about it. Almost every prominent Dem who blah blah-ed about violence not having any place in our political discourse has egged on the rabid base at some time during the past year.
. . .
Yes, this feels different.
Erin Friday: . . . as the left celebrates the demise of one this country’s best men, Charlie Kirk, I can no longer hold out hope that the left can be saved. Democrats are the party of death.
Jeff Childers: There can be no doubt that a shockingly large number of Democrats want to murder Republicans with whom they disagree. That’s kind of a problem.
Targeting Charlie Kirk was also a huge mistake. His death signals that the time for talking seems to have passed. They killed the guy whose mantra was, “let's talk about it.” So … where do we go from here? Are we supposed to now also say, “let's talk about it?"
Robert Arvay: It is one thing for someone to say, “That can’t be true. Show me your evidence.” It is quite another when the response is, “I don’t need any evidence. Everyone already knows that Trump is evil, and so are you.”
The sad conclusion is that, to those who are intractably infected with TDS, facts do not matter, nor does reasoning have any hope of moderating their hatred of the man. His most commonsense policies are rejected for no other cause than that they are Trump’s.
There is no ordinary explanation for this. Something evil is afoot.
Stephen Green (Mr. Vodkapundit): Like virtually everybody I've spoken with in the last 16 hours or whatever it's been, I have a swirling collection of observations, and a few half-formed thoughts, but no answers.
My hope is that if you'll indulge me with just enough of your time today, maybe together we can sort through the observations and thoughts until we can at least make a little sense out of Kirk's senseless murder.
I suspect answers might yet be impossible to come by, or at best, any that we do find will feel unsatisfactory. But what satisfaction could we even hope for after yesterday's act of pure evil?
. . .
these are among Kirk's most inflammatory, fascist, genocidal, etc. statements:
"Get married and have children."
“Now, we must also be real. We must be honest with the population. Having an armed citizenry comes with a price, and that is part of liberty.”
“Only in America could a President achieve the lowest ever black and Hispanic unemployment, have black business startups skyrocket 400%, see wages go up for black workers, advocate for prison reform, pardon wrongfully convicted people of color, and still be called a racist.”
“Transgenderism and gender ‘fluidity’ are lies that hurt people and abuse kids.”
If today's report is true, it might be that last one that got him murdered.
